La Rocco Tower stands sentinel on the west coast of Jersey, rising from the rocks as the tide retreats. This piece was born from a single moment. A walk around the headland from La Pulente, where a thin film of seawater catches the light around the exposed rocks on a calm, bright day. Luminous, still and quietly surreal.
The wood itself is Albino Macassar Ebony, a tree that grew thousands of miles away on a different continent, its grain shaped over centuries by its own soil and climate. Yet within those grains of time lay the contours of this Jersey seascape, waiting to be found. That the tide was precisely where it was, at that precise moment, and that the tree had grown exactly as it had — the convergence of these two vast, unhurried timescales captured in a single glance, a single breath.
Ink, watercolour, oil and pencil drew out what was already there.
Two stories. The tree’s and the Island’s, brought together in a single piece, and in doing so, a quiet reminder of how profoundly time and the natural world shape us all, wherever we grow.
