At the heart of this piece lies a whisper-thin veneer of crown elm, its surface so finely sliced that the wood’s natural grain seems to float like the shifting patterns of the sea itself. Merged with quilted maple, this delicate layering creates a depth that mirrors the ocean and within it, the grain has formed the unmistakable shape of a heart, with a crab’s domed shell.
The parallel is intentional: just as no two crabs carry the same markings, no two pieces of wood share the same grain. Each is entirely its own.
The crab’s legs radiate outward in warm amber and coral against a deep blue ground, achieved through cyanotype, where light and liquid conjure the colour of the ocean itself. Look closer, and the scatter of white dots across the surface hints at something celestial, a constellation hiding in the shadow of the shell.
Born under the sign of Cancer, the artist brings a lived connection to this creature and the sea. Bold, personal and utterly one of a kind.
