A unique work in veneer, this piece brings together four distinct timbers, each sourced from a different origin, each with its own story.  Laid side by side, their natural grains have been carefully aligned to conjure the tidal flats of St. Ouen’s Bay, Jersey, with the silhouette of La Rocco Tower standing sentinel in the distance.

The deep, swirling figure of the walnut traces the pull of sand beneath retreating water. Above it, the quilted maple shimmers, read as light breaking through cloud, or rain drawing curtains across a stormy sky.  Every element is found in the wood itself; nothing is painted, nothing imposed.

This is a singular piece.  It will not be recreated.  It is impossible.  Just like this moment.

Be at Ouen is an invitation to pause.  To find stillness in grain, weather in texture and place in pattern.

This work is a singular piece.  It will not be edition-printed, reproduced, or recreated in any form.  The buyer acquires not only the artwork but the certainty that nothing like it will ever exist again.

The making of it

Four individual veneers, including French walnut and quilted maple, were sourced, selected, and hand-aligned over considerable time.  The grain matching required to suggest tidal movement, atmospheric weather, and a specific landmark is not replicable.  The wood itself dictated the composition.

Unique veneer artwork of this calibre, rooted in a specific and beloved landscape, carries both artistic and sentimental value, particularly within Jersey, where St. Ouen’s Bay holds deep cultural significance.
