The water rushing back to meet the incoming wave can provide some very painterly effects. Using a slow shutter speed I aim to portray the breaking wave in brush strokes. This is a technique which can prove difficult to master as the sea is so unpredictable but when it works, it is quite beautiful. This is an effect which the naked eye cannot see and which always delights me.
